Evaluating Claims in Persuasive Texts

When an author tries to persuade you, they often present multiple claims to support their argument. Some of these claims may be valid—they are based on facts, evidence, or trustworthy sources. Others may be invalid or misleading because they rely on personal opinion, poor reasoning, or unreliable sources. On the GED® test, you’ll need to determine which claims are credible and which are not.

Sample Passage

Directions: Read the passage below, then answer the question.

Good evening, Council members.
Four years ago, my wife bought me a bicycle. At first I was reluctant, but with time I started riding on weekends and soon noticed improvements in my health—more stamina, better circulation, and a more toned body.
Then I realized my workplace was only two miles away. I began biking to work regularly and found it refreshing. Even in winter, I ride on clear days, and the cold air energizes me.
Did you know that, according to the U.S. Census, approximately 500,000 people bike to work every day? Another source, a website titled Environmental Benefits of Cycling and Walking, reports there are around 2.8 million bike commuters in total. I estimate that at least a third of them are under age 16—many biking to school or college.
That’s why I propose that our community create bike paths along the busiest roads. It would make travel safer for cyclists and drivers and promote a healthier lifestyle.
I’ve already collected 412 petition signatures without much effort. I’m confident I could gather over 1,000 if needed.

Question: Which claim is the most valid?

A. Some 500,000 people bike to work each day.
B. Bike paths make travel safer for vehicle drivers as well as for bikers.
C. At least a third of the 2.8 million bike commuters are under the age of 16.
D. The speaker can easily get more than 1,000 signatures on the petition.

Correct Answer: A

Why? This claim is supported by a reliable source—the U.S. Census—which provides official data. The other claims are either opinions, personal estimates, or lack supporting evidence.
